A deceptively simple starting hole with the real temptation to take driver and go for the green. The two large ficus trees are easily reachable and any shot finishing among them or just short will be blocked from attacking the green. A lay-up is advised, to the centre or left side of the fairway, which will leave a straightforward pitch to a gentle green and a birdie chance.
HOLE 1
A deceptively simple starting hole with the real temptation to take driver and go for the green. The two large ficus trees are easily reachable and any shot finishing among them or just short will be blocked from attacking the green. A lay-up is advised, to the centre or left side of the fairway, which will leave a straightforward pitch to a gentle green and a birdie chance.
HOLE 2
A relatively short Par 5 but fraught with danger particularly down the right where a lake lines the entire hole. A good drive is required, most will not reach the bunker at 250m and only the best finishing between the bunker and lake will have a reasonable option to try for the green in two. The rest should lay-up to the generous fairway short of the pot bunker. A precise approach is required to a green sitting above a steep slope down to the pond, mangroves close by on the left, and steep run-offs over the back and to the right.
HOLE 3
This Par 4 sets up for a nice draw as it doglegs left around a large bunker. Water on the right will catch those who do not execute at least a straight drive. A cautious drive short of the bunker will find a generous fairway and a short to mid iron to the green Three main hole positions are the front right entrance to the green, middle left just over the bunker on the left, and the rear upper tier guarded by the pot bunker at the back right. Long putts and recovery shots will be challenging so finding the fairway from the tee is essential.
HOLE 4
A tight driving hole with water on the right and tree planting down the left. Longer hitters taking on the pot bunker and the lake can get close to the green, though straying left or right will leave very tough recovery shots. The left side of the fairway is preferred as the green opens up from here and takes the large deep bunker at the front right of the green more out of play for the approach. Run-offs all around will carry the careless approach far from the green. Tough hole locations are front right, over the bunker, and the narrow back portion of the green.
HOLE 5
A long Par 3 from the back tee guarded by a central bunker in front of the green and mangroves just over the back. Club selection is critical, particularly for the very tough, shallow left section of the green over the bunker. Wind direction should certainly be allowed for when selecting clubs here. The right side of the green is much deeper and the wise player will aim centre of green. The long steep slope off to the right will catch the overly cautious however and a long difficult recovery chip will be faced back up to a green that slopes away from you.
HOLE 6
Temptation to hit driver should again be resisted on this short dogleg right around the lake. Bunkers on the left should be avoided as the approach to the plateau green, with no bunkers, but run-offs all around will be all the more difficult from the sand. A full shot in is preferred, particularly to a front hole location as this section of the green slopes away from the approach.
HOLE 7
A medium length Par 3 requiring an accurate shot to set up a birdie chance. The green slopes right to left so it is wise to miss on the left to leave an uphill putt or recovery chip. The bunker on the right should be avoided at all costs. The ridge off the bunker and swale running through the middle of the green will make long putts difficult if you have over or under clubbed. Only the bravest of players will take enough club to reach the small back tier, with the bunker on the right and a slope directly to the lake on the left.
HOLE 8
A chance to let rip with the driver but beware of the large stand of trees on the left and water on the right if you stray too far off centre. Only the longest of players will attempt the green in two, which will require threading the ball past a deep bunker 40m short of the green and another guarding the left side of the green. Though the lay-up area short of the bunker are generous but players should keep left as the large bunker will block the view of the green from the lower right section of the fairway. Tough hole positions are front left just over the bunker, and back left and right guarded by bunkers either side of the green.
HOLE 9
A very tight driving hole with water down the entire left side and heavy tree planting along the right which will block overly cautious drives played away from the water. Approach shots must be accurate as an undulating green will test long putts and recovery shots. There are three main sections of the green; front left next to the pond; an upper tier to the centre right; and a back section over the hump in the middle of the green, with water left and bunker back right.
HOLE 10
A short par 5 requiring an accurate drive to ensure a good score. The best option is to lay-up short of the bunker, to the right side of the fairway, from where the hole opens up. Longer hitters may try to squeeze past or over the bunker, a draw is ideal, but must avoid the trees on the left and pond to the right. Second shots have a relatively generous fairway between the pond on the right and two fairway bunkers on the left. The bunker short right of the green narrows the entrance to the green and guards a front right hole location. Two central bunkers either side of the green guard the difficult hole positions at the back left and right of the green, with the left location on an upper tier also.
HOLE 11
A tough looking dogleg left hole around water down the left all the way to the green and particularly daunting when the wind is in your face. A generous width of fairway between the large bunker and the lake entices the player to hit driver, but a cautious fade or push away from the water will almost certainly find sand. The green is raised above the fairway and the lake guards hole locations along the left. The very narrow back section of the green is wedged between the lake and the bunker on the right and will require a courageous shot to attack.
HOLE 12
A long tough Par 3 with some terrific hole locations. A generous “bail out” area to the front right of the green will help those with an index stroke but will face a long undulating chip to make par. A long bunker guards the entire right side of the green and will make for delicate recovery shots back to the green sloping away towards the water. The left section is beside the water and between the front and back bunkers, requiring a gutsy faded shot starting out over the water. The far rear hole location is tucked away between the back bunker and the long right hand bunker.
HOLE 13
This short par 4 is the only hole on the course with no bunkers but not without its share of defences. Water lines the entire left side of the fairway which narrows considerably between large mounds on the right and left. The green is very undulating with tough hole locations at all 4 corners of the green. Finding the wrong section or missing the green will leave very challenging putts or recovery shots. Water on the left guards the left side of the green and a steep ridge separates the front and back of the right side.
HOLE 14
The longest hole on the course will require three excellent shots to reach the green. Long hitters must play to the right of the bunkers and along the pond on the right. Conservative players will lay-up short of the first bunker or play to a preferred side of it, being careful of the water either side. Second shots must allow for the tree that splits the fairway in two, and if the rough on the right cannot be carried then players may have to play a tough approach to the green left of the tree. The diagonal green has bunkers to the left and the preferred approach is from the right from where the green opens up and the bunkers do not need to be carried. Tough hole locations are along the left side of the green close to the bunkers, particularly the very back left.
HOLE 15
Put the driver away here and play safely to the narrow fairway between the many ficus trees and two small ponds. A short iron only is required to a green guarded by two bunkers creating tough hole locations at the front. Ridges coming into the green will create long breaking putts and chips to hole locations around the edges of the green.
HOLE 16
A nice draw will help your ball around the slight dogleg left fairway. Trees left and right narrow the fairway and will catch the overcooked draw or the blocked shot. The lake on the right is in play for anything too far right also. The green sits across a narrow section of lake and tough front left and right hole locations are either side of a central bunker. Don’t get caught on the wrong side! The bunker to the right guards the right and back hole locations.
HOLE 17
A short and very pretty hole sitting between a pond at the front and mangroves at the back. A deep bunker at the front right guards the back right half of the green that is on the upper tier and also slopes away to a steep run-off to the right. The back centre section is guarded by the bunker on the left, and shots to front hole locations must have enough carry to avoid the front slope back to the pond.
HOLE 18
An accurate drive carrying 235m from the Black tee, and avoiding the large lake on the right and the tree on the left, will find the small peninsular fairway and will be rewarded with a straightforward wedge to the green. Playing “safe” to the main fairway to the left of the pond, will leave a mid iron that must contend with the large central tree and the bunker to the front left of the green. Hole locations on the right of the green, beside the pond, will require courage to attack from either fairway. Missing to the left or in the bunker will require delicate recovery shots to the green which slopes away towards the pond.
